This page was created in an effort to assist drummers in choosing the right wood.
The sound bytes on this page are single strike sound bytes of the raw shells.
Please excuse the sound quality.
The bytes were recorded using an Audio Technica AT 822
Stereo mic. I ran the mike into my sound card and recorded using n-track studio recording system.
The bytes are raw as they have no effects, filtering or inhacement other than amplitude for volume.
I used a bass drum beater to strike the shells.
You will notice each wood species has it's own unique sound characteristics.
I will be adding more bytes in the future as well as technical info regarding frequencys.
You can load the bytes into your media player and press the play button a few times to get a
good idea of the sound of the various species of wood I use to build my shells.
What you will hear is the dominant sound of the finished drum.
Many other variables are involved in the finished drum sound, but the shell and the drum head are
the most critical. Hardware plays a big part in the sound also, but hardware mostly affects the attack or
sharpness and ring. 5-1/2 x 14" Bubinga Shell 5/16" shell Wall 5 x 14" Bubinga Shell 3/8" shell Wall 5-1/2 x 14" Jatoba Cherry Shell 5/16" shell Wall 5 x 14" Padouk Shell 3/8" shell Wall 5 x 14" Walnut Shell 3/8" shell Wall 4 x 13" Maple Shell 5/16" shell Wall 5 x 13" Cocobolo Shell 3/8" shell Wall
